Stowaways On Board

We left Dublin at a little past 7:00 PM in the middle of strong winds and blowing rain. It looked very gloomy and dismal. Sitting at our dining table we looked at our friends and hoped that we wouldn’t regret our clapping when we finally sailed away.

Once we cleared the sand bar we headed north in the Irish Sea. It was rocking and rolling but it didn’t seem too bad. We headed to bed to hopefully sleep after making sure all our belongings were tied down or lying down so as to not roll off.

Actually we slept well and woke up this morning to Jim’s medicine beeper. Thank goodness for that or we might have missed breakfast.

All outside doors and walkways were roped off so we couldn’t get outside and get blown off the deck. The weather was storming, the skies dark and the wind blowing.

By 11:00 AM they announced that they removed the ropes to the outside so that we could venture out. I guess that the crew had finally passed the “man overboard test” and they felt like we could venture out.

All afternoon we were kept busy with movies to see, naps to take, and ice cream and cookies to eat. Around 4:00 PM we went out on the Lido Deck (15) to enjoy the sun that had just come forth. Here we are in the middle of the North Atlantic miles from land and while sitting there enjoying the sun we saw two stowaways: a little sparrow and a black butterfly with red tip wings! Now how did they get there and where did they think they were going?

I fed the sparrow some pizza crust hoping to keep the little guy alive. I hope they don’t try and leave since I think they would have a rough road ahead of them for awhile. If they can just sit still and lie low until we get to Iceland tomorrow then land isn’t far away.

We will arrive in the afternoon and am not sure what we will do since we didn’t get a shore excursion. If I recall they have a nice little shop off the dock so hopefully that hasn’t changed. We’ll keep you posted….. Print this post

Maybe the sparrow has made the trip before & is teaching the little butterfly about life at sea!

Sounds like you are having a wonderful trip! Continue to enjoy!

Haha...kind of like the token bird you see flying around inside Costco? You always find yourself wondering what the overall plan is.
