Our last Sunday in Paris

After last night's "Nuit Blanche", the city stayed nice and quiet EXCEPT for the delivery trucks that woke us up bright and early making their morning delivery. Since there is absolutely no room on the streets for large semi's to make a delivery, all deliveries are made daily. There is a constant sound of feet going up and down the stairs below us, taking food and liquor for the day to the restaurant below us. So much for sleeping in!

We went and met our new friends, the Perez's from Versailles, at the base of the Eiffel Tower. We couldn't believe how many people were there on a Sunday. Thank goodness we had gone to the Tower mid-week as today's line was worse than Disneyland! History lesson from Ghislaine: the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be dismantled after the 1900 World's Fair because the people of Paris hated it. It was the ugliest thing they had seen but at the start of the 20th century, radio was just coming into being and they put an antennae up and now there was a reason for the tower so it got to stay! Can you imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower? (Bob and Ghislaine are at the top of a step and I am standing on the step beneath them. They are very short!)

Bob and Ghislaine came in from Versaille on the train so we walked around until we found a little cafe to sit and have some dessert. We sat and visited for a couple of hours, just talking about traveling, life and the differences between our countries. It is so good to know that we have a friends over here if we should need them. They are the most delightful people and we are so happy to have made their acquaintance.

We said our goodbye's, kissed (that means we are friends as kissing is reserved for best of friends) and went our separate ways.

We decided to eat light for dinner and have a bowl of French onion soup so we found a Bar by our apartment that had outside seating open (to people watch). More advice to go with not buying pastry from a bread store and sandwiches from a pastry store. Don't eat onion soup from a Bar. It took over an hour to get to us and was the absolute worst onion soup we have ever had! I don't think it is even considered a possibility to tell them it was unacceptable. We just paid our bill and went home. It has taken us 4 weeks to learn this valuable lesson but you only buy food from the store in which it specializes.

We picked up our baguette and headed home for some leftover spaghetti, bread and cheese.
Tomorrow we head out early for our trip to Mont St. Michel on the west coast of France. We will be there for two days and we hope to have an internet but if we don't blog that is the reason.

Information I have been meaning to tell the women: Married women over here and in London do not wear diamond wedding bands. I have only seen one and that was today. When a woman is wearing a band it is a tiny gold or platinum band, thin and with very little decoration. My reasoning is either they save their diamond bands for special events or they just don't have them. Or maybe they don't wear them because it makes them a target for thieves! Print this post
