St. John's Newfoundland--North America's oldest city

----------Happy birthday Marilyn!!!!!!!!!

I need to fill you in with a story that has happened while on the Eurodam. Please bear with me because it does have some relevance.

One week ago at 5:45 AM the Captain came on the intercom requesting that "Mr. Burgermeister please call the front desk immediately." This was repeated 2 times and finally at 7:00 am the Captain came on and announced we were turning the ship around as we had lost a passenger!

I immediately went to the top deck to use my keen eyes to aid the ship in locating Mr. Burgermeister if he was floating in the open sea.

After 44 miles the Captain came on again and announced that Mr. B had been found and we were turning the ship back around.

Much talk ensued and it was discovered that Mr. B had a fight with Mrs. B and was found in another room. He never answered the calls and was in big, big trouble.

Of course now everyone on the ship still talks about Mr. Burgermeister, who he is, etc. Our table thought that we should make tshirts with "Where in the World is Mr. Burgermeister?" on them and sell them! We could probably make a bit of money.

So for a week the talk has never stopped. If someone is late on a shore excursion the first words out of everyone's mouth is, "It must be Mr. Burgermeister."

Okay now for the reason for this story. Last night we received our daily event and city planner. It had the history of St. John's NewFoundland on it.

"In keeping with the seaport's nautical history, St. John's recognizes the inaugural arrival of the ms Eurodan with Mayor Dennis O'Keefe and members of the Council. The City of St. John's confers upon Captain van Doselaar of the ms Eurodam, Freedom of the Seaport as Admiral of the Fleet of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. However, the City witholds the Admiral's traditional right of having unruly citizens or visitors hanged on Gibbet Hill, Signal Hill!"

Now what do you think, what that added for Mr. Burgermeister or what???????

We entered the port through a very narrow channel called "The Narrows". It is only 8 cables wide (seaman talk for whatever). Tonight a giant floating horn section of the Harbour symphony will help us sail away. Quite the celebration for this darling, little town with 500 years of history.
