We finally pulled into Ibiza at 11am this morning. Ibiza is an island near Spain on the Mediterranean side. The captain came on the intercom last night and told us that there would be a ship in Ibiza’s port carrying “dangerous cargo” and that we would have to delay our arrival until after it left the port.
Ibiza is a resort hot spot in the summer. There are tons of modern condos lining the harbor front and around the island’s beaches. Because they parked the boat quite a ways from the old town, they shuttled us around the harbor on buses. We were planning on going to a beach here, but it was a little difficult getting there, so we walked the old town and climbed a little bit up towards the castle. There were great views of the ocean and the town.
We sat down at a sidewalk café just outside the castle’s walls and had lunch. We ordered the plate of the day, cheese raviolis in a cream sauce with mushrooms—it was really delicious. So after a lunchtime rest we continued through the shops and restaurants. You have to keep an eye on the time in Spain because at 2pm, all the shops close for siesta. We stopped an Internet café to check emails and a store for supplies (Diet Coke) and rode the bus back to the ship.
Tonight they had a Spanish barbeque out on the Lido deck and so we went to it instead of our usual fine dining! The food was great and we met some new friends from New Zealand and Calgary.
All in all, I’d say we really enjoyed Ibiza and would like to come back someday.
