Portimao—The Portuguese Riviera

This area of Portugal is called the Algarve. It is along the southern edge of Portugal.
It boasts spectacular beaches and one of the best is right near the Port Terminal. Our ship anchored off the coast and we rode the lifeboats into town (tendering). They took us into the harbor and then they had buses for us to ride into downtown. Since we were trying to get to the beach, the bus dropped us off on the corner.

We had a short walk and we were at the beach. The beach is lined with high-rise hotels and condominiums. There is a boardwalk lined with little shops—it is very nice. There is a big cliff between the boardwalk and the beach to hike down. Down on the beach itself, just below the cliffs, there is a whole row of restaurants. Then there is another wooden boardwalk with wooden sidewalks extending perpendicular out to the water. Next to each sidewalk there is an enterprising young man who has a big square of plastic lounge chairs and sun umbrellas setup.

So we walked the beach a little bit—lots of seashells and little rocks. Then we broke down and paid the young man his seven Euros to sit on his chairs. We stayed an hour or so and then went to go find some lunch. We had some wonderful fish right on the beach. I had a grilled swordfish and Maridee had a “fish and chips”. We caught a cab for a short ride back to the pier and a tender back to the ship. A great day!

BTW you might have noticed in one of the pictures that Maridee is holding an extra walking implement. She has tweaked her knee again and has trouble with stairs especially. She is seeing the ship’s doctor, who gave (well not exactly gave) her a cane and told her to take it easy. He called it patella tendonitis and told her to avoid stairs at all costs!

Looks like you are having a great time! I am glad.

While you are sailing "around the world", I get to go on 2 field trips to the zoo this week with 45 Kindergarteners! Aren't you jealous? We got to touch the stingrays! Wow! What an adventure!

Have a wonderful trip and take it easy on that leg!
