Braveheart

Well we have certainly been looking forward to today. The lobby was packed with Frenchies checking out of the hotel and leaving! We waited until about noon and approached the front desk about changing rooms. They moved us right across the hall to a room with one bed (instead of our two twins). And now, we have a northern view instead of a southern view. We are not ocean front, but just ocean view. We can also see the rest of Roses up on a hill—a very nice view.

The wind has been howling today—all day long. People are not outside, nor are they doing that “passagietta” thing. The wind was blowing from the land out to sea. I saw lots of plastic shopping bags “airborne” as they were whipped out to sea. It wasn’t cold but it certainly made it feel cooler.

After just a few days here already, we are realizing the same thing as when we went to Italy. It sounds silly, but there is nothing to eat here but seafood! It is usually prepared in what we would think of as an Italian way. It seems it is always in a tomato base or else paella. There’s fish and there’s squid and there’s prawns—in everything! One of the problems is that the prawns are not peeled and cleaned. So if you get a big bowl of seafood soup, it is full of prawns with heads, eyeballs, and legs. It is a huge mess to clean them and you don’t end up with much for all your work.

Today at lunch, we tried a new place that served Tapas. They are small plates of snacks. Of course they had plates of the prawns, calamari, sardines, mussels, but they also had bread with cheese or ham, potato nuggets with some dipping sauce, and others. So we picked out three of them and picked out a couple of diet Cokes, and called it lunch!

Another thing we have noticed over here, is that places serve mayonnaise with everything. You get a basket of bread and a cup of mayo—no butter. You get a pasta salad and a scoop of mayo—no dressing. You get French fries and a scoop of mayo—no ketchup. They seem to like it on everything!

Tonight we went back to a restaurant we have already visited—determined not to get seafood. We ordered Gazpacho (very good), Maridee got vegetarian paella and I got Fettuccini Carbonara. I do have to say that Maridee has been very accepting of the seafood. She has eaten several mussels off my plate and I have seen her try the Calamari—she’s being very brave. Print this post
